neon nae jjin-chi-ni-ya
“You're my real best friend”
Example line · heartfelt friendship moment
Word by word
The line, explained
There is a moment in every friendship drama when the jokes stop. One friend has stayed up all night helping the other through something awful, and finally the other one says, quietly: 넌 내 찐친이야. You're my real best friend. It is slang, but it lands with real feeling. And it teaches you 찐, one of the most popular words in modern Korean, meaning real, genuine, the real deal.
넌 is 너 (you) plus the topic marker 는, squeezed into one syllable. It means as for you, and it singles the person out: of everyone, you are the one. 내 means my, the casual form. So far it is the same shape you might use for any sentence about someone: 넌 내 ___ 이야, you are my ___. Fill in the blank and you have a compliment.
찐 comes from 진짜, which means real or really. Say 진 with extra force and it becomes 찐, with a tense double ㅉ that sounds emphatic. It works mostly as a prefix: 찐친 is a real friend, 찐팬 a true fan, 찐사랑 real love. It can also stand alone: 이건 찐이야 means this is the real thing, and 찐으로 means for real, honestly.
친 is short for 친구, friend. Korean slang loves to clip words and glue them together, so 찐 plus 친구 becomes 찐친. Then comes 이야, the casual 'is', used because 친 ends in a consonant. The ㄴ of 친 links into 이야, so it sounds like jjin-chi-ni-ya. That linking is the same thing that happens when you say 사람이야 or 마음이야.
Fans use 찐 constantly: a 찐 reaction is an unscripted one, a 찐 laugh is a real laugh, and a 찐팬 has been there since debut. Saying 찐친 to someone is warm and flattering, never rude. Try swapping the noun in this line: 넌 내 첫사랑이야 means you're my first love, and 넌 내 영웅이야 means you're my hero. Both are lovely things to hear.
Grammar · 찐 + noun / 찐이야
using 찐 in a sentence
찐 is slang for real or genuine, from 진짜 said with extra force. Put it in front of a noun as a prefix: 찐친 (real friend), 찐팬 (true fan), 찐사랑 (real love). It can also stand alone as a noun with 이야: 이건 찐이야 (this is the real deal). As an adverb, 찐으로 means for real.
- 이건 찐이야.This is the real deal.
- 나 찐팬이야.I'm a true fan.
- 찐으로 감동했어.I'm genuinely moved.
Why it hits
찐 spread through online comments and variety shows in the late 2010s and stuck. When idols call a bandmate their 찐친, or fans spot a 찐 reaction, it means no acting, no script — the real thing.
