The line, explained
Every language has a sound for the moment your brain stops. English has 'whoa' and 'OMG'; Korean has 헐. 헐, 너 진짜야? — 'whoa, are you serious?' — is the line you type when a friend says they got concert tickets, or when they say they lost them. The word means nothing by itself. That is exactly why it can mean everything.
헐 is an interjection, which is grammar's way of saying it stands outside the sentence and reacts to it. It began as internet slang, a written version of a sharp little intake of breath, and spread into speech so completely that your Korean teacher probably says it. It always comes first, followed by a comma or a pause, and then the actual sentence explains what the shock is about.
The trick with 헐 is tone. Said quick and high, it is delight — someone just announced a comeback date. Dragged out as 헐… with a falling note, it is dismay — the comeback was pushed back. Flat and dry, it is 'ugh, seriously?' at a bad joke. Koreans read all of this from length and pitch, and in text they encode it with the dots and ㅋㅋ that follow. The syllable itself never changes.
The rest of the line is ordinary Korean. 너 is 'you', casual. 진짜 means 'real' or 'really', and it is one of the most useful words you will learn — 진짜 좋아 (really good), 진짜? (really?). Adding 야, the casual 'is', makes 진짜야 'it's real', and the rising tone makes 진짜야? 'is it real? — are you serious?' So the whole thing is: gasp, you, for-real? Three beats, exactly like the English.
Because 헐 is pure reaction, it pairs with anything shocking. Keep the gasp and swap what follows: 헐, 너 거짓말이야? (whoa, are you lying?) is betrayal, 헐, 너 괜찮아? (whoa, are you okay?) is concern, 헐, 너 미쳤어? (whoa, are you crazy?) is a friend about to do something stupid. One warning: 헐 is for friends and comment sections only. Say it to your manager and you will get a very long look.
Grammar · 헐
the slang gasp
헐 is an interjection — it sits at the front of a sentence and carries a reaction, not a meaning. It covers 'whoa', 'OMG', 'no way', 'ugh' and 'seriously?' depending on tone and face. Stretch it (헐…) for dismay, say it short and high for delight. It is strictly casual: friends, chats, comments. Never to a boss, never to an elder.
- 헐, 진짜?Whoa, really?
- 헐… 어떡해.Oh no… what do we do.
- 헐, 대박 예뻐.OMG, that's gorgeous.
Why it hits
헐 exploded out of Korean online slang in the 2000s and is now so common that variety shows print it on screen in giant letters whenever a guest is stunned. Watch any K-pop reaction video and you will hear it within a minute. Its texting spelling varies with mood: 헐 is normal, 헐… is dread, 헐ㅋㅋ is laughing disbelief.
