대박
dae-bak
“No way! / Jackpot / Awesome”
Slang of the week · heard in variety shows, lyrics and comment sections
Word by word
The line, explained
If Korean had one word for 'wow', it would be 대박. You will hear it from idols reacting to fan gifts, from friends tasting good food, from commenters under a music video. It is one syllable away from being a reflex.
Literally, 대 means big and 박 is a gourd — a reference to an old folktale where a gourd splits open and pours out treasure. So 대박 started life meaning a jackpot, a huge unexpected success. A film that 대박 났다 broke the box office.
Then it loosened up. Today 대박 is simply the reaction you have when something is amazing, shocking, or bigger than expected — good or bad. Your friend got the concert tickets? 대박! The bill is three times what you thought? Also 대박, with a different face.
In casual speech it also slides in front of adjectives as an intensifier: 대박 맛있어 (insanely tasty), 대박 비싸 (ridiculously expensive). This is very informal — fine with friends, not with your boss.
Its cousins: 헐 (heol) is the sharper, breathier 'whoa' of pure shock, and 미쳤다 ('it's crazy') is what you say when something is almost too good. In a K-pop comment section you will see all three stacked in one line.
Grammar · 대박 + 이다 / 나다
using 대박 in a sentence
On its own, 대박! is an exclamation. 대박이다 (it's amazing), 대박 나다 (to hit it big — a shop, a song, a drama). You will also see it used like an adverb before adjectives in speech: 대박 맛있어 (insanely delicious).
- 이 노래 대박이다.This song is amazing.
- 그 드라마 대박 났어.That drama became a huge hit.
- 대박 귀여워.So cute (unbelievably cute).
Why it hits
대박 started as a word for an unexpected windfall — a box-office hit, a restaurant that suddenly has a queue. Around the 2000s it became the all-purpose reaction word for young Koreans, and K-pop idols saying 대박! on variety shows carried it around the world.
